M A L U + PITA ZAPOT = Phenomenal Duo
October 12th and 13th was San Diego’s Latin American Art Show and Art San Diego. Both events featured visual artists from across the country and around the world. One delightful addition this year, was a M A L U & Pita Zapot Perform. Los Angeles-based dancer, Pita Zapot, an accomplished contemporary dancer and local San Diego musician, MALU, a classical and electronic musician and composer. I was fortunate enough to experience their performance at both art events. This duo was phenomenal!
The show begins with a slow approach by Pita dressed in an all white ensemble, she approaches holding a black balloon in one show and a small box in another. At the Art San Diego show, Pita perches herself on this small box, she cocoons herself into a ball in the middle of the art fair. She is completely still as crowds of people pass her or stop to watch.
Next, MALU ignites the electronic music and Pita is turned on like a dancer in a music box. Pita begins to outstretch into the surrounding space. Uncoiling she moves to the tunes, very purposefully yet easily flowing through elaborate movements as the music changes. Meanwhile, MALU controls the sounds and seamlessly takes us from serene to intense beats. Pita contorts and glides across the audience in beautiful movements. Then MALU begins playing the violin and the entire show hits a crescendo! The audience is completely memorized as the two move musically together making a powerful statement about the art of women, their talent, their grace and their strength.
